How to Compare Aviation Maintenance Schools in the U.S.

Originally published · Updated
Editorial guide by AMT Resource Hub

A useful school comparison is based on verified program information, cost, practical instruction, and student support. There is no single school ranking that fits every prospective technician.

Create your own shortlist

Use current FAA school information to identify relevant programs, then filter by location, schedule, and ratings offered. Check any degree or transfer goals separately. Contact the specific campus and program you would attend, since offerings can differ across an institution.

Ask the same questions at every school

Request the syllabus, complete price, tool requirements, practical facilities, attendance rules, and testing preparation details. Ask how students receive feedback and make up missed work. Compare written responses in one table so a polished tour does not substitute for evidence.

Evaluate outcomes in context

Ask how completion and employment figures are calculated and what dates they cover. Talk to graduates when possible. Decide which program you can realistically finish and afford. Avoid treating promotional “top ten” lists as proof of program quality.

Your next steps

  • Build a shortlist from current program information.
  • Compare each school using the same questions.
  • Check outcome definitions and total costs.
