Relocating for an Aviation Maintenance Job: What to Check

Originally published · Updated
Editorial guide by AMT Resource Hub

A job-related move works best when the offer, costs, schedule, and location fit together. Compare the whole arrangement before treating a pay increase as a better opportunity.

Confirm the offer before making commitments

Obtain the written job title, reporting location, start date, base pay, shift, and benefits details. Ask whether the offer depends on background checks, airport access, drug testing, or another condition. Confirm how relocation payments are issued and whether repayment is required if you leave early.

Build a realistic moving budget

Include deposits, travel, temporary lodging, utility setup, tool transport, and time between paychecks. Compare commuting time and housing costs near the actual maintenance facility, rather than near the city center. Review any per diem or travel reimbursement separately from guaranteed base wages.

Investigate daily life on the shift

Check transport options for overnight and early shifts, parking arrangements, and access to essential services. Discuss schedule changes, overtime expectations, and time off. If possible, visit the area before signing a lease and keep a plan for delays to the start date.

Your next steps

  • Get the offer and relocation terms in writing.
  • Price housing and transport near the workplace.
  • Check what happens if the start date changes.
