Aviation Maintenance Job Profiles: Reading the Differences

Originally published · Updated
Editorial guide by AMT Resource Hub

Maintenance advertisements use many overlapping titles. Compare responsibilities, work settings, qualifications, and schedules to understand what each position actually involves.

Group roles by the work

Separate aircraft line or hangar work from component, engine, structures, and avionics positions. Identify whether the role emphasizes inspections, troubleshooting, planned tasks, repair, or coordination. Similar titles can still describe different daily routines.

Check the requirements and authority

Review certificate ratings, relevant systems experience, employer training, and supervision. Clarify any expectations around documentation, inspections, or approval responsibilities. A senior title does not tell you every authorization required in that organization.

Ask questions that reveal the routine

Discuss the shift, team size, reporting location, aircraft types, tools, and onboarding. Ask what successful performance looks like in the first few months. Use the answers to tailor your résumé and decide whether the position matches your background.

Your next steps

  • Compare duties rather than titles.
  • Clarify required qualifications and authorizations.
  • Ask about the first months on the job.
